Planning for the future of campus identity is vital to staying in line with industry trends, and avoiding the pitfalls of leaning on outdated hardware or technology. But plotting a comprehensive plan for the future can be a complicated matter that, when done without the aid of industry experts, can lead to a number of pitfalls. We’ve spent nearly two decades on the road speaking with hundreds of campuses around the globe about their issuance environments and identity needs. Along the way, we’ve seen a common need for strategic documents and future planning for card programs and the many aspects of campus life that the student ID influences. We call this strategic document the Campus Identity Roadmap. The Identity Roadmap is a physical document, and the process by which it’s created provides institutions with the ability to establish standards, policies and procedures. Additionally, the Roadmap is an effective way to identify ‘blockers’ on campus – be it personnel, outdated technology, hardware, or political restrictions – as well as a means to help break down departmental siloes, and offer insight on emerging technologies. Typically the Campus Identity Roadmap is based on a number of variables: existing infrastructure, political structures, campus IT strategies, government regulations, and more. ColorID’s role in the process is a consultative one, helping institutions by sharing insights gained through our work with hundreds of other institutions. We look to highlight the strengths and weaknesses in a campus’ existing issuance environment, and identify the areas where a campus should focus its identity efforts going forward. Institutions that lack a clear vision for the future often find themselves making hasty decisions when more calculated planning is required. This is only made worse by departmental divides, where people know what’s happening in their department, but rarely have insight into what other departments are grappling with. It’s never too early to start thinking about new technology and implementation strategies for your campus. Creating a Campus Identity Roadmap can help card office management lead by positive example for both staff and the institution overall, and ColorID wants to help create that forward-thinking plan.
